Here are my main takeaways As stated later on in the book: 'Governments tend to use the term trafficking not to reflect actual harm, but in order to give a progressive gloss to anti-migrant and anti-prostitution policing. Obviously, malicious clients and police can Prostitutes Boo this law.

The chapter about the US is too devastating and wholly unsurprising to repeat here. The Nordic Model, often praised for criminalising clients but not SWs, is essentially everything wrong with white, Western feminism summed up in one policy: - SWs can be much less picky about their clients when the respectful ones are scared about getting caught, thus exposing them to greater risk of poverty and violence at the hands of malicious ones.

It thus empowers Prostitutes Boo to Prostitutes Boo SWs especially SWs Prostitutes Boo colour in ways that are not prosecution. On the one hand, it can punish unacceptable sex workers and seize their money. It needs to be implemented in conjunction with other policies that make life less precarious for marginalised SWs, like people of colour Prostitutes Boo drug users; the criminal factor of sex work is far from the only problem if the police see other excuses to exercise their Prostitutes Boo power over SWs.

Overall, the aim of the SW rights movement is to make sex work unnecessary by providing better Prostitutes Boo alternatives, access to cheaper housing, etc. We should be asking who has taken power Prostitutes Boo from them and how they Prostitutes Boo reclaim it. The biggest plus is how it compares major legal models on sex work, shows evidence that full decriminalization works best for safety and labor rights. The first thing I noticed is that the authors have this contradictory way of presenting the views of sex workers. They criticize how the "erotic professional" view led to other views within sex work being ignored, which is a very good point.

That leads to Prostitutes Boo next question. Why have Mac and Smith surrendered so much to the other side of the debate??? Seriously, I keep imagining the exchange.

Opponents: But sex work is icky and degrading and exploitative and misogynistic! Forget that this seems a major tactical error. It also ignores that sex workers don't percent agree with that. There are sex workers who love their jobs, Prostitutes Boo don't think it's icky or degrading, who argue that exploitation and misogyny are more a result of criminalizing and stigmatizing Prostitutes Boo work. Don't get me wrong, this book presents really good evidence for decriminalization.

It has really taught me the inner workings of the structural ways the law is a hindrance to sex workers, and the extent to which it is set up to fail the most vulnerable in Prostitutes Boo society. It delves into the socioeconomic factors and lived experience of sex workers, including importantly sex workers of colour and trans sex workers.

It is worth noting that both Smith and Mac are white and university educated sex workers, but their analysis of sex work is intersectional and does a decent job of amplifying marginalised voices. Smith and Mac are not here to convince you of the morality of sex work; they are not asking you to theorise over whether Prostitutes Boo work is liberating and empowering.

Rather, concrete arguments are put forward as to how we can better the Prostitutes Boo of sex workers in a practical and legal sense. Abuses such as racist policing, corruption and sexual assault are fundamentally bound up with the vulnerability of the sex worker who, when defined as criminal, has little recourse to justice or protection.

Jun 26, Emily rated it it was amazing Shelves: lockdown-reading. The voices of sex workers are Prostitutes Boo marginalised from mainstream feminism, with deadly consequences for their safety. This book explains clearly and powerfully why a carceral response harms the women it claims to 'protect' - and why the Nordic model is not the answer. There is also an important chapter Prostitutes Boo elucidates how borders and immigration regimes harm sex workers so that only their dismantling will make sex work safe.

Also, I often have an impression that Marxist books from Anglo countries just wave around Marx Prostitutes Boo substantially using his work, but here I felt that the Marxism was substantial and structurally important; not just there because it's fashionable in left-wing intellectual circles. Jul 10, A rated it really liked it. This book doesn't ask Prostitutes Boo sex work is good or moral, or whether it is empowering or not. It doesn't treat sex work as an abstraction to be theorized over by academics or wonder about whether sex work upholds the patriarchy.

It does this by breaking the legal approaches into 6 categories: full criminalization, partial criminalization, Nordic model, legalization, and decriminalization. What I like about this book is that it Prostitutes Boo an academic book written by sex workers. This is the only academic-type book that I know of written Prostitutes Boo sex work by actual sex workers.

It takes the position that whether you think sex work is moral or not is immaterial. It is still work and therefore should Prostitutes Boo protected Prostitutes Boo the same labor laws as other types of labor. Although parts of the book could be a bit dry, it was a fast read and did a really good job of explaining the legal systems categorized in the book. Also, it seems like nowadays whenever sex work is talked about, the focus is Prostitutes Boo on the "high-end call girl".

The book takes the stance that a lot of sex workers are those that are the most vulnerable in society, whether because Prostitutes Boo immigration status, drug use, or gender-non conformity, and therefore are the ones most in Prostitutes Boo of protection of labor laws. They point out that the proposals of many feminists treat the most vulnerable in our society as collateral damage in their quest to abolish sex work.

One thing I thought this book could have explained better is what the authors meant by the phrase "abolishing borders".

 Boo, Stockholm girls

Because sex workers who are migrants are a large focus of the book, the book talk about immigration policy and calls for abolishing borders. But I honestly don't know what this means. Does this mean the world is all just one big country not trying to be facetious or does it mean that we allow the flow of people between countries without any Prostitutes Boo of restrictions?

And how would this look, realistically? I thought there could have been a chapter devoted to defining what is meant Prostitutes Boo abolishing borders.

Revolting Prostitutes: The Fight for Sex Workers’ Rights by Molly Smith

Jan 14, Ana rated it it was amazing. There are many things to love about this book. It is, by far, one of the best comprehensive overviews of sex workers' rights available. It lays out a strong argument for decriminalization and levies constructive criticism Prostitutes Boo both contemporary feminism and privileged members of the sex working community.

It centers trans sex workers and sex workers of color, it explores how borders and immigration enforcement hurt migrant sex workers, and Prostitutes Boo insists that decriminalization is just one part of Prostitutes Boo are many things to love Prostitutes Boo this book.

It centers trans sex workers and sex workers of color, it explores how borders and immigration enforcement hurt migrant sex workers, and it insists that decriminalization is just one part of a much larger fight for for sex workers' liberation.

Additionally, the three chapters on the Nordic model, legalization, and decriminalization are must-reads for anyone who wants to explain why Prostitutes Boo is the only justifiable path out of all three. Smith and Prostitutes Boo are critical of sex-positive feminism in ways that are certainly warranted, although I can't say I agree with all of their views on sex and sexuality in relation to sex workers.

If you're coming from a radical sexual liberation background, you probably won't either. But what I like about Smith and Mac is that they ultimately treat sex workers they disagree with with respect, and they understand why differences emerge within the community: as long as it doesn't punch down. Overall: a must-read for anyone who wants to fight on Prostitutes Boo workers' behalf or understand why decriminalization is necessary. It's a great introductory overview for classrooms, newsrooms, and seminars.
